Officer of the Month - April

The Foundation is happy to be able to provide a cash award on behalf of the citizens of the City of Lynchburg to the Officer of the Month: Officer Peter M. Begley.

On Thursday, April 18, 2024, officers were involved in a vehicle pursuit that terminated in the area of Concord Turnpike. As the vehicle came to a stop, the driver fled on foot and eventually jumped into the James River. Unable to swim and in shock from the cold water, the driver was in danger of being swept down river by the current. Officer Begley recognized that boats from the Lynchburg Fire Department may not arrive in time to save her. He quickly volunteered to rescue the suspect and entered the river to ensure her safety. Officer Begley waded into frigid, chest deep water, and pulled the endangered woman safely to the shore as she slipped from the log that was keeping her afloat.

The river conditions were extremely dangerous, even for an experienced swimmer. Officer Begley’s quick actions that night saved a woman and demonstrated his dedication to the preservation of life as a law enforcement officer. He is being recognized for his bravery and selflessness in rescuing a person in extreme danger.

Thank you, Officer Begley, for your courage and devotion to duty. Our department and our community are lucky to have you.
— Lynchburg Police Department
