“Congratulations to Emergency Communications Officer Carlie Padgett, LPD’s Emergency Communications Officer of the Quarter for the 2nd Quarter of 2026!
Padgett demonstrated exceptional professionalism, composure, and dedication while handling a 911 call involving an individual who had entered the James River and was being swept downstream. The caller was actively screaming for help, creating an intense and rapidly evolving situation.
Padgett remained calm under pressure, gathering vital information and coordinating rescue efforts with Lynchburg Fire Department and Lynchburg Police Department. While monitoring the water rescue, she also coordinated with the railroad to have trains halted, allowing first responders to safely access different areas of the tracks as they worked to reach the individual.
Her quick thinking, professionalism, and ability to remain composed under tremendous pressure contributed to a coordinated rescue effort. Within 30 minutes of the initial 911 call, the individual was rescued.
